We need nominations from you now. Last year we had a great time guessing what books might win the Newbery Award. We didn't get them right, but we read a lot of great books. Let's start early this year with possible nominations. Respond to this blog with the name of a great book you want to nominate and a short supporting statement. If you have read the same book as somebody else say whether you agree with them. Remember: the book must be published in 2009 and written for children or young adults by an author residing in the United States. That's why J.K. Rowling has never been eligible for the award. Here's a list of our nominations:
FIC COC The Girl who Threw Butterflies Cochrane, Mick.
jFIC DIC The Magician's Elephant DiCamillo, Kate.
jFIC ENG Tropical Secrets: Holocaust Refugees in Cuba Engle, Margarita.
92 Colvin Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice Hoose, Phillip M.,
jFIC KEL The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate Kelly, Jacqueline.

ReplyDeletePlease add to the list The Georges and the Jewels by Jane Smiley.
ReplyDeleteI have added DIEGO: BIGGER THAN LIFE by Carneb T. Gernier-Grand to the list. This is a unique biography written in verse and beautifully illustrated about the life of Diego Rivera, one of Mexico's most famous and interesting artists.
ReplyDeleteI just read Neil Armstrong is My Uncle by Nan Marino and really enjoyed it. It has some quirky characters as well as some interesting relationships between these characters.
ReplyDeleteIt is a quick read and well worth your time!
Enjoy!
Today is the day we meed to discuss our list. I read Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, Georges and the Jewels, The Girl Who Threw Butterflies, Lucky Breaks, The Magician's Elephant, Peace; Locomotion, Season of Gifts, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, and Tropical Secrets. I found something to love in each of them. The Girl Who Threw Butterflies and Where the Mountain meets the Moon are my choice for the Medal...hard to choose between them. For Honors I would include Season of Gifts, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate and Peace Locomotion. I hope the Caledcott goes to The Lion and the Mouse. CWF
